Died: 1218
Banned from Unauthorized Preaching: 1184

Biography:
Peter Waldo was the founder of one of the most important reforming (some would say heretical) movements in medieval Europe. Waldo decided to follow the words of Jesus literally by selling all he had and set out to restore the church - an agenda not unlike that of Francis of Assisi and Dominic.

Unlike the latter two, however, Waldo and the group which had gathered around him were banned by Pope Lucius III at the Council of Verona from unauthorized preaching. Instead of continuing to try and work within the system, they proceeded to create an alternative church.

What is the Philosophy of Religion?
Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history. The line between theology and the philosophy of religion isn't always sharp, but the primary difference is that theology tends to be apologetical in nature, committed to the defense of particular religious positions, whereas Philosophy of Religion is committed to the investigation of religion itself, rather than the truth of any particular religion.
