Name:
Vulgate

Dates:
Commissioned: 382 CE (Pope Damascus)
Completed: 405 CE
Pronounced only Authentic Latin Text: 1546

Definition:
The term vulgate comes from the Latin word vulgus, which means "the common people." Vulgate has become the title for the official Roman Catholic version of the Bible, as prepared and edited by Jerome (Hieronymus) around the year 400 after being commissioned to do so by Pope Damascus in 382 CE.

The project of creating the vulgate took Jerome 20 years, relying upon the original Hebrew and Aramaic for the Old Testament works instead of the Greek intermediaries as had been traditional. He finished in 405 CE, but many objected to what he came up with - thus, it took a while for it to completely supplant other Latin translations. Eventually, the Council of Trent declared that Jerome's Vulgate was the only authentic Latin text of the scriptures.

What is the Philosophy of Religion?
Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history. The line between theology and the philosophy of religion isn't always sharp, but the primary difference is that theology tends to be apologetical in nature, committed to the defense of particular religious positions, whereas Philosophy of Religion is committed to the investigation of religion itself, rather than the truth of any particular religion.
