Definition:
The Vencentian Canon is an idealized formulation which is designed to determine
what does and does not qualify as valid Roman Catholic doctrines. It was formulated
by St. Vincent of Lerins (who died before 450 CE). It reads, in summary:
quad ubique, quod semper, quod ab ominbus creditum est, which means basically
"what has been believed everywhere, always and by all."
In other words, valid Catholic doctrines are those which have been accepted by all Catholics, everywhere and at all times. This necessarily excludes any newly formulated doctrines and, so, is more often used by conservative or reactionary Catholics than by liberals and progressives. Unfortunately, it is an idealized criterion because it does not appear that any doctrines would ever really qualify under it.
