Definition:
The Shourd of Turin is revered by many as the original, actual burial shroud of Jesus Christ. The cloth appears to have the image of a crucified man on it, complete with blood and markings on the body. There are, however, a number of problems which make it very difficult to identify this piece of cloth with anything that might have been a real burial shroud of anyone.

  • The proportions are all wrong - no human being could have made that impression. The impression is also not consistent with a person lying down. The blood on the head, for example, is consistent with a person standing.
  • At the time when Jesus was supposed to have lived, burial was done with multiple pieces of cloth and the New Testament stories include the use of multiple piece - including a separate piece of the face.
  • Radiocarbon dating performed in 1988 by three different labs all agree that the cloth dates to between 1260 - 1390, around the time when the cloth was "discovered."
  • Church leaders at the time when the cloth was first "discovered" rejected it as a fake.
  • The "blood" on the cloth has not been identified as blood but instead as red ocher and vermilion tempera paint.
  • The same sort of image can be duplicated artistically.

What is the Philosophy of Religion?
Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history. The line between theology and the philosophy of religion isn't always sharp, but the primary difference is that theology tends to be apologetical in nature, committed to the defense of particular religious positions, whereas Philosophy of Religion is committed to the investigation of religion itself, rather than the truth of any particular religion.
