Biography:
Albert Schweitzer was a missionary, theologian and medical doctor whose philosophy
was based upon the principle of "reverence for life" and a commitment to serve and help
others. He originally studied theology and worked as a minister, but after reading about
the need for medical missions he decided to become a medical missionary. He went back
to school to earn a medical degree and, in 1913, he founded a hospital in French Equatorial
Africa.
Although a devout Christian, he was unorthodox in his doctrines. For example, in his book The Quest of the Historical Jesus (1906) he rejected the traditional beliefs about Jesus and instead viewed him more as a spiritual role model and leader.
