Pastoral Letters:
The Pastoral Letters are the three closely related letters to
Titus
and two letters to Timothy.
Although they are similar to those written by Paul, scholars generally agree that
they were written by someone else, probably as late as 85 CE. The three letters
are called "pastoral" because they all deal with matters relating to the guidance
of a Christian community.
The letter to Titus addresses the duties of assigned presbyters, the duties of various social classes, and Christian virtues. The first letter to Timothy is particularly known for Paul's comment that he would permit "no woman" to teach or have authority over any many - thus establishing the second-class status of women in Christian societies for centuries to come.
