Babylonian Captivity

Definition:
P is the abbreviation used by biblical scholars for the "Priestly Source" of material in the Pentateuch. P is generally considered to be a combination of material from during and just after the Babylonian Captivity - thus it was written during the 5th and 6th centuries BCE. The reason that the source is identified as "priestly" is the overarching concern with matters pertaining to the priesthood - rituals, holidays, laws, etc. In addition, the P material provides structure to the Torah in its present form, with P material giving the first account of creation in Genesis and then also describing the death of Moses at the end of Deuteronomy.
