The book of Numbers, part of the Pentateuch, is called Ba-Midbar in Hebrew, a title which
means "in the wilderness." The English title, derived from the Greek arithmoi,
stems from the fact that the beginning of the book deals with a census of Israel. The main
topic of this book is Moses' attempts to lead the Hebrew people out of the wilderness after
their flight from slavery in Egypt in hopes of reaching the land God had promised them.
