Definition:
Nestorianism is a heresy named after Nestorius (d. 451), patriarch of Constantinople from 428 until he was deposed in 431. Ever since 381, the office of patriarch of Constantinople had been recognized by Church authorities as being second only to the bishop of Rome when it came to deciding Church doctrine.

According to Nestorius, within the incarnated Christ there existed two distinct persons: one divine and one human. At the Council of Ephesus in 431 he was removed from office through the efforts of Cyril of Alexandria, his chief antagonist. Nestorius was banished to Upper Egypt where he died alone in 451.

His name was also applied to the Nestorian Church which was located in the Persian Empire. More properly known as the Church of the East, from the 5th century on it had adopted a strict anti-monophysite theology. Over time it established itself through India and China independent of the churches in the West.

What is the Philosophy of Religion?
Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history. The line between theology and the philosophy of religion isn't always sharp, but the primary difference is that theology tends to be apologetical in nature, committed to the defense of particular religious positions, whereas Philosophy of Religion is committed to the investigation of religion itself, rather than the truth of any particular religion.
