Name:
Charles Martel (the Hammer)
Mayor of the Palace of the Kingdom of the Franks
Dates:
Born: c. 688
Died: October 22, 741 at Quierzy
Battle of Tours: 732
Biography:
Charles Martel is best known for having led Frankish forces against the Umayyad armies
under the command of Emir Abd el-Rahman somewhere around the city of Tours. With this
defeat, the Muslim advance through Europe was halted and, after a couple of decades,
Muslims were expelled from France completely. Although they continued with their hold
on the Iberian peninsula, Martel's leadership ensured that European civilization would
continue to be Christian in nature and take its own course, separate from Islam.
Martel's son Pippin the Short, and his grandson Charlemagne, would continue with the
consolidation of the Frank kingdom, uniting their fate with that of the Catholic
Church based in Rome, Italy.
