Name:
Saint Justin Martyr

Dates:
Born: ? (at Flavia Neapolis in Palestine)
Died: c. 165
Feast Day: June 1

Biography:
Justin Martyr was an early Christian apologist who originally studied among various secular philosophical schools, like the Pythagoreans, but was eventually moved by the example of Christian martyrs to convert to Christianity. According to Justin, Christianity was the "only safe and worthy philosophy."

Because of his philosophical background, when he taught Christianity in Rome he did so as one of the philosophers, thus attracting a diverse audience for his ideas. It is believed that he was the first Christian apologist to make consistent and rigorous use of philosophical categories in explaining and developing orthodox Christian doctrines.

Prefect Junius Rusticus had Justin Martyr beaten and then beheaded for his work on behalf of Christianity.

Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history.
