Judges:
The book of Judges, which follows the book of
Joshua,
tells the story of the Hebrew people from the time of the settlement of Canaan until
just before the creation of the monarchy about 1000 BCE, a period of about 200 years.
The title "judges" comes from the fact that the book is structured to describe a
series of apostasies into which the people had fallen. Each time, a "judge" rises up
to saves Israel from destruction and thereafter a time of peace during which this
savior-judge rules.
