Gospel According to John:
The Gospel According to John is the most theologically difficult of the four gospels, delving into
a number of mystical and esoteric concepts not otherwise addressed in the more story-intensive
synoptic gospels. The more sophisticated theology is likely due to it being written much later
than the other gospels - probably no earlier than 90 CE and some scholars date it as late as
150 CE, with 100 CE being a common conclusion.
Because John is so heavily focused on the mystical aspects of Jesus' mission, not nearly as much is told about Jesus' actual life. For example, stories about Jesus' birth, childhood, temptation in the wilderness and more are completely missing. In the story of the Last Supper, Jesus' gives a lengthy and theologically sophisticated speech, a major departure from how the story is told in the three synoptic gospels.
