Biography:
Joachim of Fiore (1135-1202) was a Benedictine monk and abbot who claimed to have
received visions directly from God. In part, these revelations were about the nature of
the world - evidently, God infused creation with a bit of his divine essence. Joachim became
better known, however, for teaching that creation is moving through a series of three stages:
One under God the Father when humans lived under harsh laws, one under Jesus who
brought a message of love, but which would end under the Antichrist and a political ally.
The final stage would be one of pure spirit, involving nothing but mystical contemplation and union with God. Before that era, however, humanity would have to endure the rule of the Antichrist - and Joachim taught that it would be coming soon:
This will not take place in the days of your grandchildren or in the old age of your children, but in your own days, few and evil.

Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history. The line between theology and the philosophy of religion isn't always sharp, but the primary difference is that theology tends to be apologetical in nature, committed to the defense of particular religious positions, whereas Philosophy of Religion is committed to the investigation of religion itself, rather than the truth of any particular religion. What is Theism?
