Name: Book of Hosea
Author: the Prophet Hosea
Dating: 8th century BCE
Book of Hosea:
Written some time during the 8th century BCE in the northern kingdom of Israel (a little
later than Amos), Hosea is a prophetic work categorized with the "minor prophets" and is
one of the eight which were written before the exile to Babylon.
Hosea was commanded by God to marry an adulterous woman named Gomer. His experiences - hearbreak, rejection, betrayal, attempted reconciliation, etc. - are all explicit allegories for God's relationship with Israel. For example. Hosea gave Gomer unconditional love. He continued to hold her dear no matter what she did, even purchasing her back from others at one point. It is interesting to note that elsewhere, God is depicted as condemning things like adultry.
