Genesis is the first book of the Pentateuch, describing the beginning of the universe,
the beginning of humanity, and the beginning of the Jewish people. The Hebrew title
for this book is Bereshith, which means "In the beginning," the first words. The English
title is derived from the Greek Genesis kosmou, which means "the origin of the cosmos."
Genesis covers a great deal of time - many of the most famous ancient stories in the Jewish and Christian traditions are all contained in this one book. It moves from the beginning of the universe through the rise and fall of ancient empires, the origins of the Jewish patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and finally ends with the death of Joseph and the Israelites in Egypt.
