Definition:
Debate over the word filioque created a bitter disagreements between the
Western and Eastern Christian churches. According to the original Nicene Creed, the
"Spirit" came from the Father - but some started adding filioque to this,
meaning "and from the Son." Thus, why were saying that the Holy Spirit came from
both the Father and the Son.
This development probably started somewhere in Spain, traveling to the Carolingian court where it became popular. Monks loyal to the Carolingians and who lived in a monastery on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem began to recite this version, provoking outrange among the Eastern monks. Western churches kept the filoque addition, but the pope at the time began using the Apostolic Creed in order to avoid offending anyone.
