Definition:
After Pepin the Short agreed to protect the pope from Lombard forces in northern Italy in
exchange for papal approval of Pepin's takeover of the Merovingian Dynasty, Pepin
agreed to give Pope Stephen II (d. 757) large tracts of land which he had taken from
the Lombards.
Legally he was not supposed to do this because the land belonged to the Byzantine Empire - however, Stephen convinced Pepin that it was OK based upon a document which became known as the "Donation of Constantine." A forgery, it supposedly turned control of the Western Roman Empire from Constantine over to the pope. This document was widely believed during the Middle Ages.
