Definition:
The Dominicans are an order of mendicant preachers founded in the 13th century by St. Dominic (c. 1170-1221). Dominic traveled and preached constantly in an effort to promote the reform of Christian belief in Europe.

One of Dominic's motivating forces was his belief that heresy and apostasy in Europe were largely the fault of the church itself. He argued that people would not fall away from the true faith and be mislead by false teachers if the church itself were not plagued by corruption and worldliness. Thus, when he saw the forced conversions being performed against the Cathars, he realized that a better way must be possible.

Thus, Dominc sought a couple of things. First, a reformation of the church to make it more spiritual and a more accurate reflection of the example set by Christ. Second, for the clergy to lead and teach by example, demonstrating the proper way to live by actually living it themselves. Finally, that clergy and monks should make more of an effort to actually teach the people what they need to know.

What is the Philosophy of Religion?
Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history. The line between theology and the philosophy of religion isn't always sharp, but the primary difference is that theology tends to be apologetical in nature, committed to the defense of particular religious positions, whereas Philosophy of Religion is committed to the investigation of religion itself, rather than the truth of any particular religion.
