The book of Deuteronomy got its name from the translation of Deuteronomy
17:18, where the
Hebrew word for "copy" often gets translated as "second law," deuteronomion. In Hebrew,
this book of the Pentateuch is called debarim, which means "words" and is the from the
opening verse.
Deuteronomy is, to a large extent, a legal book, spelling out the rights and laws for the nation of Israel. It was probably composed over the course of the 7th century BCE after which point it became integrated with the rest of the Pentateuch.
