Name:
Miles Coverdale

Dates:
Born: 1487 in Coverham, England
Died: December 19, 1568
Ordained: 1521

Biography:
The name Miles Coverdale is not as widely known as other Protestant reformers, like Martin Luther and John Calvin, but Coverdale did more to spread the ideas and doctrines of Protestantism than most. Coverdale, like his friend Tyndale, understood that the key to Protestantism was the translation of distribution of Bibles in vernacular languages. So, he worked closely with Tyndale in creating an English translation of the Bible and continued in this work even after Tyndale had been burned at the stake the same efforts.

Coverdale's final product was given official approval by King Henry VIII after a group of scholars and theologians reported that, while there were mistakes in it, there were no heresies. With the support of Thomas Cramner and Thomas Cromwell, Coverdale's translation (which became known as the "Great Bible") was printed and distributed widely in both England and Europe. Today, only two copies of Coverdale's original translation of the New Testament still exist - although 18,000 were printed at the time.

What is the Philosophy of Religion?
Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history. The line between theology and the philosophy of religion isn't always sharp, but the primary difference is that theology tends to be apologetical in nature, committed to the defense of particular religious positions, whereas Philosophy of Religion is committed to the investigation of religion itself, rather than the truth of any particular religion.
