Name:
Confessing Church
German: Bekennende Kirche

Profile:
The Confessing Church (German: Bekennende Kirche) is a Protestant church organized in Germany in opposition to official Nazi policies on politics, ethics, and relations between church and state. It was originally known as the "Confessional Church" in reference to the fact that they relied upon historical Christian confessions (professions of faith, belief, and doctrine) for their theology and policies as opposed to modern political ideas.

Eventually, however, persecution of members led to them seeing themselves as a group of "confessors" under attack (in the early Christian church, "confessors" were people who were persecuted because they "confessed" or admitted to their Christian faith, but who were not also killed for their faith - that step brought on the name "martyr"). Thus, the name "Confessing Church" was adopted.
