Name:
John Carroll

Dates:
Born: 1736
Died: 1815
Ordained Priest: 1761

Biography:
John Carroll became the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States after being elected by his fellow clergy. Carroll had the task of trying to bring the ancient traditions of Catholicism together with the modern political order emerging in North America.

Carroll was himself devoted to both - not simply a devout Catholic, but also a staunch supporter of democracy and liberty. As a consequence he maintained a strong measure of independence from Roman control even while remaining attached to the papacy as a symbol of Christian unity.
