Definition:
The term canon is derived from the Greek word kanon, which means "rule" or "standard" Normally, this refers to some ecclesiastical law about some matter of doctrine or belief. Thus we have the concept of "canon law," or legal principles based upon religious beliefs.

The term canon is also used to refer to the standard works accepted as holy scriptures, as opposed to those of similar age which have been rejected as not being worthy of inclusion.

Finally, the term canon (and its correlary cannoness) is used to refer to someone who is halfway between monks and secular clergy. The work they perform neither the same functions found in monastic life nor those of a parish priest. Instead, they are involved more with contemplation and education.
