Name:
Bruno Hartenfaust (von Köln)

Dates:
Born: c. 1030
Died: 1101
Feast Day: October 6

Biography:
Bruno Hartenfaust was born in Cologne, Germany, and became a well respected teacher of theology at the Cathedral School in Reims (modern France), eventually being promoted to the post of director of the school. Sometime after 1080 he left the school in order to live the life of a hermit, founding Carthusian Order and embracing a philosophy of poverty, prayer and work. He set up a monastery at La Grande Chartreuse near Grenoble where he attracted a number of followers.

His fame spread and, as a result, he was called to Rome against his wishes to advise Pope Urban II on the issue of reforming the clergy. Eventually he was able to persuade Urban to allow him to return to his former lifestyle and he founded yet another monastery at La Torre in Calabria where he died in 1101. Church leaders wanted to canonize him, but the Carthusian Order is reluctant to accept such public honors so instead Pope Clement X designated his feast day as a "double feast" and he is regarded as a saint in practice if not in name.

What is the Philosophy of Religion?
Sometimes confused with theology, the Philosophy of Religion is the philosophical study of religious beliefs, religious doctrines, religious arguments and religious history. The line between theology and the philosophy of religion isn't always sharp, but the primary difference is that theology tends to be apologetical in nature, committed to the defense of particular religious positions, whereas Philosophy of Religion is committed to the investigation of religion itself, rather than the truth of any particular religion.
