Definition:
The word bishop is derived from the Greek word episkopos, which means
"over-seer." Although it was traditionally applied to anyone who had a position
of authority over others, in the church it came to be a divine title. A church bishop had
authority over church members in some designated geographic area.
In the Roman Catholic Church, bishops are regarded as being indispensible to the very existence of the church because they are responsible for maintaining theological order and for transmitting Christian tradition.
