Definition:
The so-called "Bible Codes" are supposedly secret codes embedded in the original Hebrew
version of the book of Genesis. These codes provide information about future events, thus
proving that God really must exist.
How do the Bible Codes work? Finding them is based upon the principle of equidistant letter sequences (ELS). You start with some letter, X, and then pick out every 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 16th, or 83rd letter. Any number can be used, but you have to use the same one every time. According to some, when we use this process, all sorts of interesting information can be found in Genesis. Unfortunately, by arbitrarily picking your starting point and the number of letters you jump, it is statistically expected that you will come across "information" in any text which is long enough.
