Definition:
The word beatification comes from the Latin beatus, which means "blessed"
and facere, which means "to make or do" and refers to a formal papal
declaration that some deceased person deserves to be called "blessed."
The basis for such a declaration is that, in life, the person had an especially holy character and, preferably, suffered an especially heroic death. The meaning of "blessed" is that they are assumed to be enjoying heaven, and for some it is assumed also that they have special status there. Beatification is the first step towards canonization.
