Biography:
Karl Barth was a German Protestant theologian who was active in the resistance to the
Nazis. One of the things Barth is better known for is his position that a "natural
theology," producing a rational defense of theism, simply isn't possible. According to
Barth: "Belief cannot argue with unbelief, it can only preach to it." He was, thus,
instrumental in the development of neo-orthodoxy, which represented a return to the
scriptures as the basis for religion.
