Biography:
John Austin (1790-1859) was a British jurist who had a significant impact upon the
development of Western legal tradition through his arguments in defense of the concept
of legal positivism. According to Austin, a law is simply a command given to society
by the sovereign and the legal system consists of the sovereign's laws. What is
significant here is that there is no necessary connection between the will of the
sovereign and morals.
