Definition:
An "advisory opinion" is when a court issues advise to an elected official to help guide him or
her in making political and legal decisions. The US Supreme Court has refused to
issues such advisory opinions because they would involve the Court in partisan politics,
thus making the Attorney General the primary source of legal guidance for the executive
branch. Some state supreme courts are empowered to issue advisory opinions, however,
and the practice is used elsewhere around the world.
