Definition:
Because astrology developed in a pre-scientific age, it has retained a number of premises and ideas which are no longer compatible with what we know about the world. One of the common beliefs in earlier ages of astrology was that everything is made up of four elements: earth, fire, air and water. Today, this idea is retained in astrology in the belief that the twelve signs of the zodiac can be divided among these elements, four in each.

The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Many astrologers attribute to them characteristics like sensuality, physicality and materialism. The air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Many astrologers attribute to them characteristics like thought and communication.

The fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Astrologers often attribute to them characteristics like intuition, action, spiritualty, and creativity. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Astrologers often attribute to them characteristics like feeling, instinct, and sensitivity.

This is the main index for issues dealing with skepticism, critical thinking, logic and arguments. The first section is Critical Thinking itself - how to think about claims and arguments you hear, how to critique arguments, and how to formulate your own arguments such that they are more likely to be sound and valid. The second section is about Skeptical Investigations - the practical application of the critical thinking skills covered in the first section. Here you will find critiques of things like astrology, alternative medicine, parapsychology, the New Age and more.
