Definition: Some mediums, known as physical mediums, could cause physical objects to move, either through the power of spirits or through their own telekinetic abilities. A popular object was a trumpet, which became known as a "spirit trumpet" because a spirit was believed to be causing the action. In fact, the action was being controlled by the medium via a black-painted rod, known in the business as a "reaching rod." In the darkness of a seance, this rod was invisible.
