Definition:
Michel Gauquelin (1928 - 1991), a French psychologist and astrologer, claimed that
although traditional astrological methods failed to prove successful, it could be
demonstrated that the planets have a profound impact upon human personality. According
to Gauquelin, at the birth of eminent people in certain professions, certain planets
appear concentrated in certain sectors of the sky.
The name "Mars Effect" comes from the claim that the planet Mars appears in a certain part or the sky at the birth of eminent sports champions. Two significant problems with his study are the small numbers of people studied and the very vague notion of what "eminent" is supposed to mean.

This is the main index for issues dealing with skepticism, critical thinking, logic and arguments. The first section is Critical Thinking itself - how to think about claims and arguments you hear, how to critique arguments, and how to formulate your own arguments such that they are more likely to be sound and valid. The second section is about Skeptical Investigations - the practical application of the critical thinking skills covered in the first section. Here you will find critiques of things like astrology, alternative medicine, parapsychology, the New Age and more.
