Definition: In 1979, complex, geometrical patterns began to appear in wheat fields around Britain. Although their origin was unknown, believers in UFOs immediately claimed that they must be the work of alien visitors, probably in an attempt to communicate with us. The primary argument used was a variation on the false dilemma, asserting that if no other explanation could be proven, then theirs won by default.

In fact, a whole new paranormal sub-industry grew up around these circles as self-proclaimed "cereologists" pretended to actually understand what was going on. What was, in fact, going on was an elaborate hoax. Various people, mostly young, used very mundane means to create the elaborate circles, fooling everyone. Crop circles have increased in complexity over time (as people learned how to make them better) and they increase in number shortly after schools let out for the year (when young people have more time and can more easily be out late at night).
