Definition: A common figure in Irish folklore is a female ghost known as a banshee. The name is derived from the Celtic terms for woman (baen) and fairy (sighe). The banshee is characterized by wailing and tattered, white clothing. This wailing typically presages the coming death of someone in the family, and is thus regarded as an omen of doom.
