Definition: Strictly speaking, augury is a method of divination using birds. The term comes from the Latin avium garritus, which means "the speech of birds." However, very little augury makes use of bird calls. Most either involves reading the entrails of unfortunate birds or the flight patterns of their more fortunate cousins.
More generally, however, augury is also used simply as a synonym for divination and the derivation of knowledge from sign, omens and portents.
