Definition: The American Society for Psychical Research (ASPR) was founded in Boston in 1885, not too long after the original Society for Physical Research was founded in London. Like its British counterpart, the ASPr was created to scientifically and systematically investigate claims of psychic powers in order to determine whether or not they truly existed and, if so, what they were, how they operated, and where they came from.

The first president of the ASPR was the eminent astronomer Simon Newcomb (1835-1909) and the officers included prominent psychologists William James, G. Morton Prince, Stanley Hall and Joseph Jastrow. Unlike most members and leaders, these last two ended up being outspoken and consistent critics of the sorts of experiments typical carried out by those doing parapsychological research.
