Definition: An apparition is the supernatural appearance, often called a ghost, spirit or specter. Apparitions are often divided into four different categories: experimental cases, crisis cases, post-mortem cases and haunting cases.
Experimental cases occur when an apparition appears due to the deliberate effort of some person - the most common example of this would be a medium who calls upon the spirits of the dead to appear. Crisis cases occur when a person experiences the presence of some spirit during a time of heightened stress, illness, or other emotional problems.
Post-morten cases occur in some connection to the death of the individual whose spirit is being experienced. This might happen shortly after death or might happen long after death, perhaps in proximity to a grave or site of death. Haunting cases occur when an apparition or multiple apparitions are experienced in connection with one single location, usually a building.
