Definition:
In the Old Testament, Zadok is portrayed as a priest in the 11th century BCE - a descendant
of Aaron who, at King David's request, anointed Solomon as David's successor to be king
of Israel. Solomon then proceeded to appoint Zadok's son as his own High Priest at the
Temple. Thereafter, the high priesthood remained in the hands of the Zadokite family until
the Maccabean times.
