Definition:
Shiva, which is Hebrew for seven, is a period of seven days used for mourning someone after their burial (as in: "to sit shiva").

Sholshim, which is Hebrew for thirty, is another stage of mourning for Jews which lasts for thirty days and is less severe than shiva.
