Biography:
Sabbatai Sevi claimed to be the Messiah who would lead Jews to their appropriate
status, both politically and religiously. Excitement and anticipation swept through
Jewish communities throughout Europe and the Middle East, but there was tremendous
confusion and disappointment when Sevi converted to Islam after he was imprisoned by
the sultan in Constantinople. Many continued to remain loyal to him, but most fell
away.
