Biography:
Born in Jerusalem while it was still under the British Mandate, Yitzhak Rabin served as Prime Minster of Israel twice - once succeeding Golda Meir 1974-1977 and then again 1992-1995. Although he won the Nobel Peace Prize with Yasser Arafat and Shimon Peres for their efforts to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians, Rabin encouraged the expansion of Jewish settlements which the Palestinians have so vigorously opposed and he himself did not seek the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
