Definition:
Shimon Peres (1923 - ) was born in Poland and immigrated to Palestine with his family when he was a child. During Israel's war for independence, Peres became responsible for arms purchases and, in 1949, he began work for the Defense Ministry.

In 1984 he served as Prime Minister in a National Unity Government and while under his leadership, Israeli forces were withdrawn from Lebanon. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 because of his efforts to achieve peaceful relations with Arabs.
