Definition:
Onan is a character in
Genesis
38 where Judah orders him to
impregnate Tamar, the wife of his dead older brother. Onan, however, did not want
to do this and is recorded as having "spilled his seed on the ground." Because of this
God put him to death - but his name lives on in the form of the term onanism, which
means masturbation.
