Definition:
Mandaeans are members of a small religious sect located mostly in the southern region of present day Iraq and Iran. Only a few thousand in number, they are the only surviving example of the gnosticism which was once a part of most religions throughout the Middle East. They do, in fact, call their communities mandayye, which means "gnostics."

Mandaeans are one of the smallest groups to be included among Islams "people of the book." Their holy scriptures, called "Ginza" (Treasure) in its current form was put together some time around the 7th century CE, but it appears to be based upon much earlier sources.
