Definition:
The figure of Jacob, son of Isaac, is a conflicted one. On the one hand, he is revered as the
father of Israel because his sons become the ancestors of the traditional twelve tribes of
Israel. In fact, he is portrayed as receiving the name "Israel" because of having wrestled
with God (Genesis 32:28).
On the other hand, Jacob is also portrayed as being deceitful. His older brother, Esau, was supposed to get Isaac's special blessing destined for the firstborn, but Jacob used trickery to get it. Isaac also tricks Esau out of his birthright (Genesis 27).
