Definition:
In Jewish tradition, Israel
was the name an angel gave to the patriarch Jacob, as recounted in
Genesis 32:28. Later in the Jewish scriptures, the name Israel
is used at times to refer to the northern Jewish tribes an at times to the entire
Jewish nation.
The name Israel continues to represent for Jews a sense of cultural and historical continuity between them today and the historical Jewish / Hebrew tribes described in the Old Testament.
