Definition:
The term habdalah refers to the portion of the Jewish sabbath ceremony when, at
the conclusion, people make use of spices and candles. The spices are smelled as a symbol
for the hope that the coming week will be fragrant; the light of the candle is supposed
to symbolize the hope for a week that will be bright and happy.
In Hebrew, the term habdalah simply means "separation."
