Definition:
The term galut, which means "exile" in Hebrew, is used by Jews as a label for
all the various explusions which Jews have suffered from the lands of Israel - for
example, the Babylonian
Captivity or the expulsion by the Romans.
Thus, the phrase "to live in galut" means to be in a state of diaspora from Israel. It can also refer to a state of physical or especially spiritual alienation, in particular alienation from the Jewish faith.
